(PM)  Ron Francis, Vice President of Hockey Operations for the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes today announced that the team has agreed to terms with goaltender Mike Murphy on a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will play Murphy $550,000 at the NHL level or $80,000 at the minor-league level in 2013-14.

Murphy, 24, began the 2012-13 season with Spartak Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey Leauge in Russia, and posted a 1-5-0 record, an .877 save percentage and 4.34 goals-against average in seven games with the club. The Kingston, Ont., native also appeared in one game with Carolina’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate Charlotte Checkers toward the end of the season after signing a tryout contract with Charlotte.

The Hurricanes drafted Murphy in the sixth round, 165th overall, in the 2008 NHL Draft. In 97 career AHL regular-season games with Carolina’s affiliates in Albany in Charlotte, he has posted a 49-36-5 record, a 2.69 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage. Murphy played in two games for the Hurricanes during the 2011-12 season, posting an 0-1-0 record. He became the first goaltender in NHL history to record his first loss without allowing a goal when he did so at Calgary on Dec. 7, 2011.

Individual game tickets for all Carolina Hurricanes exhibition and regular-season games will go on sale to the general public on Sept. 6. For information on 2013-14 Hurricanes ticket packages, please visit www.CarolinaHurricanes.com, or call 1-866-NHL-CANES.
